1st Semester HS Wismar Architectural Lighting Design for the Old Harbour complex in Wismar.
Historical Light - Not only the impressive Gothic brick cathedrals, the essential substance for a registration of the Hansestadt as a UNESCO Heritage city, but also the impressive old harbour complex make up for the Locality. However, the complex disappears at night.
For the inhabitants of any city it is of great importance to feel and expose the own identity. Discovering the own history creates interest, not only locally. No other 'material' in architecture but light has the potential to create this interest. Used in a thrilling and thoughtful way light leaves a strong and lasting impression in the public consciousness.
“LightSymphony” - Metaphors and the congruence between inside and outside
Facades are representatives. They communicate through their visual appearances the inside of the building, by use of materials, proportions, dynamics and aesthetics.
In the case of the Handelsblatt building, the architects accomplished the congruence – the façade works well as a metaphor.
Outside we see a façade that displays an unpredictable rhythm of openings/walls and light/shadow. The two rhythmic elements are connected by a horizontal glass façade.
Inside the task of Handelsblatt, and the staff working for the newspaper, is to order and give an overview of the irregular and unpredictable patterns of the financial market. Trade, in general, is about connections, dialogue and exchange.
We as ALD have to attempt to use light to make a statement about both the inside and the outside of a building. Because the found architecture is a clear statement about its inside our focus was to stay true to the facades specific characteristics (multi-layers and rhythmic irregularities) thus underlining form and function of the Handelsblatt building.
A project by the MA Students Architectural Lighting Design, FH Wismar
Shortly after the beginning of their Master degree in architectural lighting design, 28 students are faced with their first hands-on project: in the heart of Rostock, at the Universitätsplatz the illumination of the university building and the surrounding area are the focus of this project.

Light expands. The glassy frontier, the shop window, of the RAUM, a former buchers shop, is transgressed by light. The radiation is finding its way through the void, painting the wider surrounding space. A window is working with light at night to attract attention. Humans, like plants, are phototrophs - the innate inclination towards the light.
Act I of the installation PHOTOPIA plays with the magnetism of light, the luminous shop window attracting the passer-by. When close he his presented by the information of warm and diffuse light. PHOTOPIA - psychopharmaka for januar offers the people of Wismar a brightening up during the dull and cold January days.
Act II started with the opening of the installation to the public. Inside a Gestalt psychology experiment flooded the visitors perception. In days of teamwork with the students of the Geschwister Scholl Gymnasium of Wismar each white tile was covered by a black square. Different light situations enhanced the room impression.
Zum Stadtgründungsfest im Sommer 2003 realisierten die urban professionals mit Hilfe von Materialsponsoring der Firma Procon und ehrenamtlichen Mitarbeitern die Installation “Lichtreise durch das Farbspektrum”. Eine spezielle Farbsequenz gekoppelt an eine korrespondierende Sinus Schwingung versetzte die begeisterte Münchner Öffnetlichkeit in stillschweigendes Staunen.
